Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is morbid obesity?
A: Morbid obesity is the clinical term used for
a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 40 or more.
Q: Who is a good candidate for weight loss surgery?
A: Usually those people with a BMI of 40+, or those with a BMI of 35+ with co-morbidities and failed attempts at weight loss.
Q: How can I get weight loss surgery approved by my insurance company?
A: The process of approval is unique from one insurance plan to another. We will work with you and your insurance company to obtain authorization and to secure payment for your covered benefits.
Q: How long until I have surgery?
A: That depends. You must meet with a dietician, exercise physiologist and psychologist before we can submit the application to your insurance company. Some plans require 3 to 6 months of supervised diet history. Most insurance companies grant approval within 2 to 8 weeks.
Q: When can I return to work?
A: Usually after we give you a medical release. The rule of thumb is 2 weeks after a LAP Band, and approximately 4 to 8 weeks following the Roux-en-Y or BPD.
Q: Can I lose too much weight?
A: Not usually. Your body has an internal “set point” that halts ongoing weight loss.
Q: When is pregnancy safe after surgery?
A: When your weight is stable. That is usually between 12 and 18 months.
Q: How do you manage post-operative pain?
A: The ON-Q Painbuster® system works best because it automatically delivers pain relieving medication directly to the surgery site.
